Does Southwest Have Assigned Seats

Southwest Airlines Ends Open Seating Policy

Goodbye Free-for-All

Southwest Airlines is making a major change to its signature open seating policy. Effective July 25, 2024, the airline will begin assigning seats to passengers, ending the long-standing practice of allowing customers to choose their own seats on a first-come, first-served basis.

Assigned Seating & Premium Options

Under the new policy, passengers will be assigned a boarding group (A, B, or C) and a position (1-60) upon check-in. This unique group and position combination (e.g., A35) will determine their boarding order and seat assignment.

Southwest will also introduce premium seating options, allowing passengers to purchase seats with extra legroom or priority boarding. These premium seats will be in addition to the standard economy seats that are assigned free of charge.
