Australias Ariarne Titmus triumphs over Katie Ledecky
Australia's Ariarne Titmus triumphed over five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky in the women's 400m freestyle on Monday. Titmus had defeated Ledecky three years ago in Tokyo, handing the American her first ever individual Olympic defeat.
Titmus continued to pull clear over the final meters, eventually stopping the clock in 3:57.49 to complete a dominant and successful Olympic title defense. Ariarne Titmus has become the first Australian woman to defend an individual Olympic crown in more than half a century, dominating a star-studded field.
