Aurora Australis: Southern Light Display to Grace South Australia

Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis Mirror Each Other

The Aurora Australis, commonly known as the Southern Lights, is expected to put on a spectacular display in South Australia on Saturday night, as a severe geomagnetic storm impacts Earth. The phenomenon, which is the result of charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth's magnetic field, is typically most visible in the Earth's polar regions, but can also be seen at lower latitudes during strong storms.

Saturday Night Forecast

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Aurora Australis is likely to be visible in South Australia from around 10pm on Saturday night, if weather conditions are clear. The best viewing spots will be in areas with low light pollution, such as the Adelaide Hills or Flinders Ranges.

Similar to Aurora Borealis

The Aurora Australis is similar in appearance to the Aurora Borealis, which is visible in the Earth's northern hemisphere. Both phenomena are caused by the same physical processes, but they occur in different locations due to the Earth's magnetic field. The Aurora Borealis is typically more visible in high-latitude countries such as Canada, Alaska, and Norway, while the Aurora Australis is most commonly seen in Antarctica, South America, and Australia.
